Drive Without Losing the Low End: A Three-Layer Saturation
Distortion and bass have a well-known conflict: the thing that makes a signal sound driven — clipping the peaks — is also the thing that eats the low end. So the design goal for Qingtan's drive wasn't "add distortion", it was "add grit while the sub survives".
The options
- Single waveshaper (e.g. tanh) — one curve for the whole signal. Simple, but on bass it flattens the fundamental and turns punch into mud.
- Hard clip — maximum edge, minimum musicality; harsh and fizzy, and still kills the low end.
- Multi-curve, layered blend — run the signal through more than one shaper and mix them back with a preserved clean path.
What I chose, and why
I built a three-layer blend and, crucially, kept a parallel clean-low foundation:
- A saturated body — a mix of shaping curves (tanh + atan + a touch of sine) that generates warm, thick harmonics rather than one flavour of clip.
- A clean foundation — a parallel dry path (weighted to the lows) that carries the fundamental untouched, so the note keeps its punch and sub.
- A fuzzy edge — a small amount of the harsher residue on top, for bite and presence.
The reason this works for bass is the middle layer. Because the fundamental rides through on the clean path, I can drive the body layer hard for character without the low end ever collapsing — something a single global shaper can't do.
Gain staging
Two knobs make it usable:
- Input gain pushes the signal into the shapers (roughly 1×–10×) to set how much grit.
- Makeup gain compensates for the level the saturation adds or removes, so driving harder doesn't just mean louder.
The philosophy here is unapologetically empirical — the exact blend was tuned by ear until it sat right on a bass, not derived from a formula.
With octave, filter, and drive chosen, the low-end-first thread runs through all three: track the fundamental, protect the sub, add character on top.
